Design Inspiration

This year I am working on designing farm animals. I wanted a design that was easy, quick, and perfect for the beginner in mind to donate to a charity. This pattern was a part of the 2022 Preemie Crochet Challenge hosted by my friend Helen at Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

Puppy Security Blanket Free Crochet Pattern

Materials:

150 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Print 5 oz/142 grams, 252 yards/230 meters in Seastone

65 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Solids 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in Coffee

65 yards, Worsted Size 4, I Love This Yarn Solids 7 oz/199 grams, 355 yards/325 meters in Brown

HOOKS:  E/4 3.5 mm; G/6 4.0 mm; J/10 6.0 mm 

Polyfil

Yarn needle 

Stitch markers

Safety eyes (optional)

Experience Level:  Beginner

Gauge:

11.5 stitches x 6.5 rows = 4” x 4” square blocked.

Pattern used for gauge:  DC

Size: 15” x 15” x 4”

Pattern Key:

SC – Single Crochet

Notes:

  • Lovey Blanket is made in joined rounds as a traditional granny square.
  • Puppy Head, Nose, and Ears are done in continuous rounds.  Do NOT join while making each of them.  Use stitch markers to know where your first stitch in the round is.
  • Sl st does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern.  
  • Repeat stitches between * and * around.
  • Alternative to MC – Ch 2; work number of SC specified in the 2nd chain from the hook.
  • Ch 3 counts as a DC throughout the pattern.

Pattern Instructions:  

Lovey Blanket:

Using J Hook and Color A, Ch 4; sl st to the 1st ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1:  Ch 3 (counts as 1st DC in each round throughout the pattern); 2 DC into the ring; Ch 2; *3 DC into the ring; Ch 2.*  Repeat from *-* 2 more times; 1 sl st in the top of Ch 3 to Join.  (12 DC)

Rnd 2:  Sl st in the next 2 sts and in the Ch 2 space; Ch 3; (2 DC; Ch 2; 3 DC) in the same ch space; *Ch 1; (3 DC, Ch 2; 3 DC) in the next Ch 2 space*  Repeat from *-* 2 more times; ch 1; sl st in the top of Ch 3 to join.   (24 DC)

Rnd 3:  Sl st in the next 2 sts and in the Ch 2 space; Ch 3; (2 DC; Ch 2; 3 DC) in the same ch space;  ; *Ch 1; (3 DC  in Ch 1 space, Ch 1) in each ch 1 space to the corner; (3 DC; Ch 2; 3DC) in Ch 2 space at the corner.  Repeat from * 2 more times.  Ch 1; (3 DC in Ch 1 space; Ch 1) in each Ch 1 space to the beginning of the round.  Sl st to the top of Ch 3 to join.  (36 DC)

Rnd 4:  Repeat round 3.  (48 DC)

Rnd 5:  Repeat round 3.  (60 DC)

Rnd 6:  Repeat round 3.  (72 DC)

Rnd 7:  Repeat round 3.  (84 DC)

Rnd 8:  Repeat round 3.  (96 DC)

Rnd 9:  Repeat round 3. FO Color A by slip stitching to through to the top of Ch 3 and next 2 stitches. (108 DC)

Rnd 10:  Join Color B in the corner of the Ch 3 space; Ch 3.  Repeat round 3.  (120 DC)

Sl st in the next 2 DC sts and FO.  Weave in your ends.

Head:  Worked in Continuous Rounds

Rnd 1:  Using G Hook and Color C, create MC; 6 SC in MC. (6 sts)

Rnd 2:  2 SC in each st around.  (12 sts)

Rnd 3:  *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (18 sts)

Rnd 4:  *SC in the next 2 sts; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (24 sts)

Rnd 5:  *SC in the next 3 sts; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (30 sts)

Rnd 6:  *SC in the next 4 sts; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (36 sts)

Rnds 7-12:  SC in each st around  (36 sts)  (6 total rounds)

****Insert safety eyes between rounds 7 & 8 with 3 sts between the eyes.****

Rnd 13:  *SC in the next 4 sts; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (30 sts)

****Start Stuffing.****

Rnd 14:  *SC in the next 3 sts; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (24 sts)

Rnd 15:  *SC in the next 2 sts; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (18 sts)

Rnd 16:  *SC in the next st; sc2tog.*  Repeat around.  (12 sts)

****Finish Stuffing.****

Rnd 17:  Sc2tog around.  (6 sts)

****FO with a 6” tail to sew to the blanket.  Using tail, weave in and out of the front loops of the last round to close the hole.

Nose:  Worked in Continuous Rounds

Rnd 1:  Using Color B and E hook, ch 5; SC in the 2nd ch from the hook; SC in the next 2 ch; 3 SC in the last ch.  Working down the opposite side of the chains, SC in the next 2 sts; 2 SC in the last ch.  (10 sts)

DO NOT JOIN.

Rnd 2:  *2 SC in the next st; SC in the next 2 sts.*  Repeat 2 times.  2 SC in the last st.  (14 sts)

Rnd 3:  SC in each st around.  (14 sts)

FO with a 6” tail to sew to head.

Ears: Worked in Continuous Rounds

Rnd 1:  Using G Hook and Color B, create a MC; 6 SC in MC.  (6 sts)

Rnds 2-3:  SC in each st around.  (6 sts)

Rnd 4:  2 SC in each st around.  (12 sts)

Rnds 5-6:  SC in each st around.  (12 sts)

Rnd 7:  *SC in the next st; 2 SC in the next st.*  Repeat around.  (18 sts)

Rnds 8-15:  SC in each st around.  (18 sts)  (8 total rounds)

****FO with 6” tail to sew to head.  DO NOT stuff.  Fold flat and sew ends closed.

Assembly:  

Sew Nose from round 9 to round 13 between the eyes.  

Sew ears on either side of the top of the head to round 4.

Using the beginning tail of the blanket, close and FO off that tail.  

Sew the head to the center of the blanket.
